Interior Insulation for Mass Masonry Buildings

Existing mass masonry buildings are often in need of upgrades to improve energy efficiency and effective function of the exterior walls for new interior uses. In many cases, interior insulation is considered as an option. In this presentation, we will review interior retrofit approaches and analysis tools for mass masonry buildings. We will provide insights on the pros and cons of various approaches by reviewing fundamental and practical considerations. The presentation will include a summary of risk assessment methods and the latest modeling tools being applied for these applications.

Speaker Bio

Sarah Gray, P.Eng., CAHP is Principal, Senior Building Science Specialist at RDH Building Science Inc. Sarah has been in the building science and heritage conservation fields for almost 25 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Science in historic preservation from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work is focused on heritage building rehabilitation, existing building condition assessment and renewal, and building enclosure consulting for new construction. Sarah was formerly on the Board of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals and served as the chair of CAHP’s membership committee for several years. Sarah is currently on the APT Board of Directors and is co-chair of APT’s Preservation Engineering Technical Committee.
