Durable Concrete Repairs on High Profile Projects
Description
The presentation will provide an overview of details for creating durable concrete repairs in high profile case study projects, with a focus on below grade leak prevention. It is important to understand characteristics of the repair material properties as well as the substrate material. Chemical grouts are one repair solution for stopping leakage in concrete structures. Not all grouts are the same, therefore this presentation will discuss advantages of selecting a grout or combination of grouts to provide the most successful repair solution.
Experience and industry knowledge – both past and present – creates the foundation of designing “durable” lasting repairs. The presentation will illustrate examples of materials charts and a sample of a project “check list.” This information has proved to be critical when evaluating how to mitigate or manage leakage, especially when faced with an “emergency” project. These tools become a valuable asset when there is no existing history of products used on previous repairs.
The presentation will contain pictures and background covering high profile leak repair projects starting in 1997 and continuing through 2025. These case histories include: Boston’s Central Artery Big Dig Tunnel, Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant, 2001 – 9/11 World Trade Center emergency repair and subsequent Freedom Tower repairs through 2011, Puerto Rico Combined Cycle Power Plant – below sea level uplift pier repairs, United States Government Publishing Office 2017, 2023 and 2025, and Hartford, Connecticut Combined Sewer Outflow TBM Tunnel. The presentation will conclude with a reference to ICRI guidelines, webinars, and field reports.

Monica Rourke, has extensive experience with projects in waterproofing and chemical grouting. She has worked as a contractor, manufacturer’s representative, and a specification engineer and consultant. Monica concentrates her efforts providing products and support services for tunneling projects, concrete repair and waterproofing applications, along with strategies for stabilization of underground structures. Monica is a Fellow of International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI), a member for 26 years, and served on the Board of Directors for 11 years. She was the 2008 National President and recipient of the ICRI President’s Award for outstanding dedication and service to the concrete repair industry. She has co-authored the ICRI Technical Guideline No. 340.1 entitled: “Guide for the Selection of Grouts to Control Leakage through Conc rete Structures,” is currently chair of the 710.e Committee covering – Curtain Grouting Techniques and Applications for creating barrier membranes and mitigating water through underground structures.
